Words: Maggie Scardifeld
Hey, no one ever turned their nose up at a string of pearls. But there are lots of other thoughtful ways to give green this season, and in the process, show your support of growing (no pun intended) Australian small businesses. But where do you start? Here, using the Greener Spaces Better Places looks – from the minimalist vibe of Desert Dreams, to the loose and lovely Jungle Vibes – we’ve selected one thoughtful gift idea for the taking.
1. IF YOUR LOOK IS: BEACHY GREEN

You’ll be the envy of the whole beach with this lush, tropical-print water-proof brolly from Basil Bangs (complete with a Toucan or two). And the best part? It’s roomy enough for the whole family.

2. IF YOUR LOOK IS: HAPPY HOUR OASIS
CONSIDER: Unico Zelo 2019 Evergreen pinot noir, $22.99
Happy Hour just got a lot happier thanks to winemakers Unico Zelo, who are behind this limited-edition pinot noir made from donated fruit. The wine was made as a way for Unico to give back to their hometown of Gumeracha, in the northern Adelaide Hills. Profits from the wine are helping locals breathe new life into the main street.
3. IF YOUR LOOK IS: BEST BUDS
CONSIDER: The Garden Fresh Peapod, $16.95
Who says you don’t make friends with salad? Your furry friends will love playing with these plush, handmade peas in a pod; each toy has pet-friendly fillers made from 100 per cent post-consumer recycled plastic bottles. And there’s apples, carrots, pumpkins and zucchini options, too.
4. IF YOUR LOOK IS: THE REMEDY
CONSIDER: Bush Medijina Mini Balm Pack, $48
Bush Medijina work to help preserve the traditional bush medicine practices of Indigenous people in the Northern Territory. Seven Warnindilyakwa women, of the Groote Eylandt Archipelago, are employed full-time to create these balms, and all profits go straight back into the community.
5. IF YOUR LOOK IS: BACKYARD BATHERS
CONSIDER: Addition Studio Bath Brew, $17.95
These giant tea bags for the bath will come in handy for your next “me time” moment. We can’t decide between the Riverstone, with essential oils such as pink grapefruit, rosemary and carrot seed, and the Australian Native, which combines native ground wattle seed, Macadamia oil and pink ochre.
6. IF YOUR LOOK IS: BIRDS & BEES
CONSIDER: Miellerie Lake Pedder’s Nectar Honey, 900gm, $28
This rich, organic and biodynamic honey is made from the nectar of more than 150 wildflowers from south western Tasmania. Honey on hot-buttered toast sounds like a holiday to us.

CONSIDER: Sage Leaf Robe by ANEAU, $120

10. IF YOUR LOOK IS: DESERT DREAMS
CONSIDER: Provider Store Candle, from $39
We call the hand-poured candles at Surry Hills boutique Provider Store in Sydney “investment candles.” Not only do they smell heavenly, but afterwards, the Japanese ceramics can be reused. Either as stunning tea cups, or refilled with soy wax at Provider for just $15.

It’s both awe-inspiring, and wildly jealousy inducing. Be warned.

17. IF YOUR LOOK IS: HEAVEN SCENT
CONSIDER: Lovebyt all-natural toothpaste and toothbrush set, $55
Bad news: plastic toothbrushes take over 400 years to decompose. That’s a pretty good reason to invest in a Lovebyt set, which contains two tubes of Australian-made botanical toothpaste, and a set of biodegradable bamboo toothbrushe
18. IF YOUR LOOK IS: HANGING BOTANICA
CONSIDER: Argyle Hanging Vase via DEA Store, $215
Your living room is filled with plants cascading from the ceiling. Next stop: the walls. This stunning frame-like vase, made in Japan and responsibly sourced by local Sydney business the DEA Store, shines a light on foliage the way a picture frame does an artwork.
